Microseason #38 of 72: 寒蝉鳴 “Evening cicadas sing” [126/365]

The thirteenth 節気 “sekki” division of the traditional Japanese calendar is:

立秋
(りっしゅう)
“risshū”
‘first day of autumn’

The second “kō” microseason within this division is:

寒蝉鳴
(ひぐらし なく)
“higurashi naku”
Evening cicadas sing

That makes 寒蝉鳴 the thirty-eighth microseason of the year!

It typically lasts 13~17 August.

寒蝉
(かんぜみ // かんせん // かんぜん)
“kanzemi” // “kansen” // “kanzen”
cicadas which sing in late autumn

It’s not late autumn, and the “higurashi” pronunciation doesn’t appear to be in the definition on the Jim Breen dictionary link. Another mystery 🤔
